Texas A&M basketball enters a new era with head coach Bucky McMillan taking over the program after Buzz Williams departed for Maryland. On Monday, the former Samford head coach was officially introduced to the fan base, providing plenty of quotes regarding what he hopes to bring to College Station in 2025 and beyond.
At the young age of 41, McMillan’s fast-paced offense is built around offensive efficiency and relentless defensive pressure, which resulted in four consecutive 20-plus wins seasons. The Alabama native is determined and passionate, and in the new era of analytics-based coaching, especially after the Todd Golden-led Florida Gators’ National Championship, McMillan was the right hire.
National opinions have also been favorable, ranging from Jay Bilas to now SEC Network veteran analyst Paul Finebaum, who praised McMillan as a potential “game-changer” in the SEC during his recent appearance on McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning.
“The easy answer is Texas A&M. I think Texas A&M today sits in a much better position with Bucky McMillan to get to a Final Four than it did under Buzz Williams,” Finebaum stated. “And I know it’s easy to pile on Buzz Williams after he left. He was a good coach. He wasn’t a great coach. He could take you to the tournament, he might win you a game. He wasn’t going to get you too much farther than that. I think Bucky McMillan has a chance to, to completely be an absolute game-changer in the SEC.”
McMillan’s recent staff hires include Mitch Cole and Kyle Keller, who served under former head coach Billy Kennedy. Cole coached with McMillan at Samford for the last three seasons and is well known for his recruiting prowess, especially in Texas.
