Alabama football legend Nick Saban nominated for Emmy award

When former Alabama football coach Nick Saban retired and traded in his signature game day polo for a role each week on ESPN’s ‘College GameDay,’ it’s doubtful that the Crimson Tide legend had plans to attend this year’s Sports Emmy Awards in New York City.

All the same, Saban has been nominated for his work on ‘GameDay’ in the category of “Outstanding Personality/Emerging On-Air Talent” at the 46th annual Sports Emmy Awards, set for April 20 at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall in Manhattan.

Joining Saban on the list of nominees are ESPN’s Jason Kelce, Prime Video’s Richard Sherman and Ryan Fitzpatrick, and TNT Sports’ Jay Wright, the former Villanova men’s basketball coach who led the Wildcats to two NCAA Tournament championships.

Saban won six national championships of his own while at Alabama (and one previously at LSU), but his weekly appearances on College GameDay became must-see viewing beginning in “Week 0” when the ESPN crew traveled to Dublin, Ireland, for 2024 opener between Florida State and Georgia Tech.

Throughout the season, Saban delighted viewers — and angered some with delicate sensibilities — and GameDay co-hosts, particularly Pat McAfee, with his oft-colorful tales and anecdotes.

Among the greatest hits? When discussing NIL payments, Saban said ahead of FSU-Georgia Tech: “If you don’t pay the right guys, you’ll be s— out of luck.”

Months later, when commenting on the postgame scuffle at Ohio Stadium between Michigan and Ohio State on the Dec. 7 edition of Gameday from Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Saban said:

“I think to fine these schools $100,000 is like worrying about mouse manure when you’re up to ears in elephant s—.”

Saban also blasted Ohio State fans for what he felt was a lack of support after the Buckeyes’ upset loss to Michigan and said of Auburn’s Jordan-Hare…
