REO, Ind. — Brandon Neighbors was named the next head football coach at South Spencer High School.
The hire was approved during a special South Spencer School Corp. board meeting on Wednesday. Neighbors had been an assistant coach with the Rebels across multiple stints for nearly a decade. He now becomes the 10th head coach in program history.
The 2004 South Spencer graduate called this a “full-circle” moment.
“I’m excited to take over and see where this goes,” said Neighbors. “To play here under coach (Bruce) Green and to be back and really have the opportunity to lead the program in the way I see fit is exciting for me and my family.”
Neighbors is no stranger to the football program. He was an All-State quarterback for the Rebels before playing at Wabash College. Neighbors had been an assistant for South Spencer across three different stints – he was most recently the offensive coordinator under coach Jeff Daming.
As for play style? He prefers to have multiple looks offensively and bring pressure on defense. South Spencer went 5-5 last season, finishing third in the Pocket Athletic Conference Small School Division and lost to Forest Park in the Class 1A sectional. The Rebels must replace several skill players, including All-State quarterback/defensive back Ty Brown.
“We’re going to be a hard-nosed, disciplined, tough team,” said Neighbors. “Really getting the guys together and becoming more of a family – building some toughness both mentally and physically. We’re 1A football, so we play both ways. It’s being in shape for whatever many games it takes. That goes into conditioning.”
Daming stepped down in February after five seasons, posting a 19-31 record at his alma mater.
