Auburn’s A-Day spring game will be an open practice instead of a traditional scrimmage.Coach Hugh Freeze cited player health as the reason for the format change.The practice will include live periods, including a “red zone lockout” competition.Scoring in the red zone lockout will be modified to award points to the defense for stops and takeaways.
AUBURN — Hugh Freeze is hopeful the Auburn football faithful won’t be disappointed come Saturday.
That’s when the Tigers will hold what’s usually their annual A-Day spring game. However, as many programs have shifted their spring games to open practices this year, Auburn has done the same. It doesn’t mean the day’s team events won’t be open to the public, nor that there won’t be fan events happening throughout the day.
But Freeze explained some Thursday both why the Tigers made the change and what fans can expect from what’d usually be an actual game.
“I just don’t think it’s wise for us to go out there and beat each other up, and we’re already kind of banged up,” Freeze said. “It’ll be a normal practice; like today, truthfully. If you got to today, there will be some end zone, some skelly, (skeleton) and then we will – our young guys will go a little live period. Then we’re going to end with what we call red zone lockout, which will be a live period.”
The first team to 18 points wins, Freeze said, and the offense will start with the ball on the 25-yard line. Most scoring plays will be tallied accordingly.
