LSU football defender Harold Perkins has played a few positions in his time with the Tigers. He was a pass rusher as a true freshman in 2022 before moving to inside linebacker in 2023. Prior to his season-ending ACL injury in 2024, LSU tried Perkins at a couple of different spots.
As Perkins returns for his senior campaign, LSU plans to deploy No. 7 at the STAR position in Blake Baker’s defense. The STAR role typically features a hybrid between a safety and a linebacker. Someone who can cover in space, but also make plays in the box.
When meeting with the media, Baker shed some light on why LSU saw STAR as Perkins’ best fit.
“I just think the star is so, so versatile. And quite frankly, we sat down as the year of the year and I said, ‘Where are you most comfortable,’ and he said ‘the star,’ and so he’s got that capability to still allow us to be flexible from a coverage standpoint. But I do think he’s a really, really good space player. I think, again, with that position you’re able to do a lot of different things with him,” Baker said.
Baker said Perkins’ movement will prevent offenses from knowing where Perkins will line up every snap, allowing the Tigers to disguise pressure and coverages.
“The more position flexibility the guy gives you, the more versatile we can be on defense,” Baker said.
When Perkins is healthy, he’s one of the top defensive playmakers in the SEC. His 41 pressures as a true freshman ranked fifth in the conference. In 2023, his 24 pressures ranked fourth among SEC linebackers. Perkins has 16 career sacks to go along with seven forced fumbles and two interceptions.
