Ohio University football’s Shay Taylor entering transfer portal

ATHENS — Shay Taylor will have a new home this fall.

Taylor, a Sheridan grad who starred at linebacker for Ohio University in 2024, announced on Friday that he has officially entered the NCAA transfer portal. A fifth-year player, he will have one year of eligibility remaining after spending four years with the Bobcats.

When reached soon after he posted his decision on X, formerly Twitter, Taylor confirmed that one of his potential destinations was Charlotte, where former OU head coach Tim Albin is the new head coach and former Bobcat linebacker coach Nate Faanes joined him on staff.

Albin led the Bobcats to an 11-3 record, which included a Mid-American Conference championship game win against Miami and StaffDNA Cure Bowl conquest of Jacksonville State in 2024.

The 6-3, 220-pound Taylor, a third-team All-MAC performer who had 10 tackles-for-loss and three sacks, played massive roles in those feats.

“I’ve got some offers that I really can’t look away from,” Taylor said. “Four years I’ve been here (at OU) and now I’m going to get paid and play at a higher level.”

Taylor said he would be the starting middle linebacker at Charlotte but plans to test the waters, adding there are likely some Power 4 opportunities available as a backup. In the meantime, he will take visits and finish his degree online, which he said will be finished at the end of the semester.

His love for Athens and the OU program made the decision a difficult one, but the coaching turnover as a fifth-year player weighed heavily into leaving. He was the last player offered in his recruiting class.
