Kentucky football: Mark Stoops addresses the team’s need for consistency
Kentucky football coach Mark Stoops addresses the Wildcats’ need for consistency and is excited to see continuity with his players.
LEXINGTON — Before Kentucky football wraps up spring practice, outsiders have a final chance to get a look at coach Mark Stoops’ latest team heading into the 2025 season.
Just don’t expect to see a traditional spring game from the Wildcats on Saturday.
It’s a similar story across the country, where end-of-spring intrasquad scrimmages are increasingly going the way of the dodo bird: extinct.
In place of a conventional game, UK Athletics announced Saturday morning’s session will be a multi-pronged practice, with an official name, to boot: “Kentucky Football’s Spring Showcase.”
Per the news release, Saturday “will feature practice segments and interactive features” for those in attendance. While it noted “game play could be limited … fans will get an up close and personal look at the 2025 Wildcats.”
And this fall will be an important one for Stoops’ program, which is coming off its worst season (4-8 overall, 1-7 in SEC play) since his debut campaign in 2013. Saturday offers a window into the near future.
Here’s what to know about the new-look event:
As noted above, while there might be game-like parts of Saturday’s practice, there will not be a traditional, four-quarter spring game between blue and white teams.
It will more closely resemble open practices Kentucky has held in the past.
The final practice of the spring for Kentucky football will not be televised or streamed. The only way to catch Saturday morning’s festivities is attending in person.
While there’s no live TV coverage or stream, UK’s release noted snippets of Saturday’s session “will follow on social media and on the SEC Network in the coming weeks.”
