Hugh Freeze discusses post-spring transfer portal needs

AUBURN — The college football offseason is something that never sleeps, as evidenced by the turnaround Auburn football is facing.

The Tigers wrapped spring practices with A-Day on Saturday. Four days later, they’ll be dealing with the second transfer portal window of the offseason, which doesn’t close until April 25.

The program added 16 transfers during the winter portal window while seeing 20 players depart, and Hugh Freeze explained Saturday that Auburn may not be done adding to its roster.

“We haven’t made that final determination yet, and some of it will probably depend on what’s available,” Freeze said. “But positions, you never will turn down interior D-Linemen or pass rushers or some guys with experience. I really like our young linebackers. Could we use one that has some experience? If one’s available, probably so. And never turn down a great cover guy either. I think offensively, we’re pretty set — provided, obviously, we’ve got to retain our roster, too.”

Experience is the prevailing trait in it all. Eight underclassmen make up the bulk of Auburn’s defensive line. Six underclassmen are in Auburn’s cornerback room, and six of its seven scholarship linebackers are either freshmen or sophomores.
