SOUTH BEND —As the 10-day spring transfer portal window looms, Notre Dame football coach Marcus Freeman was asked about roster management after Saturday’s watered-down Blue-Gold Game.

“We’re not actively seeking to add to our roster,” Freeman said. “We’re happy with what we’ve got. If something comes to our attention that we see adds value to our roster and our program, then we have to have a conversation about it. But there’s nothing intentional right now about these upcoming weeks.”

The spring transfer portal window for FBS undergraduates opens April 16 and runs through April 25.

In addition to planning out the final three practices of the reimagined spring period, Freeman, his coaching staff and his personnel department might be forced to huddle in response to a defection or two.

“We spend time every day together,” he said. “If a guy on our current roster is interested in getting in the portal, I’m sure we’ll have those conversations and figure out what’s best for them (and) for us.”

With leading rusher Jeremiyah Love sidelined after tweaking his right hamstring in an April 5 open scrimmage, Notre Dame gave plenty of carries on Saturday to deep reserves Gi’Bran Payne (nine rushes, 30 yards) and Kedren Young (eight rushes, 25 yards and a fumble).

Midyear enrollee Nolan James Jr. showed the sort of scatback potential (seven touches, 76 yards) that Payne did before suffering a torn ACL in last year’s spring game.
