Ohio State football spring transfer portal: Are DL needed?

Ohio State coach Ryan Day is open to adding defensive linemen when the transfer portal reopens next week.

Following the Buckeyes’ spring game on Saturday, Day said, “We’ve got to take a hard look at it.”

No other position group has seen as much turnover since last season. The Buckeyes lost all four starting defensive linemen due to expiring eligibility, and Hero Kanu transferred to Texas in January, leaving them without a defensive tackle who had been one of their top backups in recent years.

To bolster the line, the Buckeyes picked up Idaho State defensive end Logan George as one of six transfers during the winter window.

But they could pursue more depth during a spring window that begins on Wednesday, allowing players to enter the portal through April 25.

Day was fairly muted while giving an immediate assessment of the defensive line following the spring game.

“It seemed to me like there was a lot of knock-backs,” Day said, “but I don’t want to make any judgment until I watch the film.”

Day later praised George, who was active pressuring the Buckeyes’ quarterbacks, continuing a months-long trend.

Since George began practicing with the Buckeyes following his enrollment in January, he is said to have been a challenge for offensive linemen to block.

“He has strong hands,” Day said. “He’s got physicality.”

George rotated as part of the second-string defensive line during the spring game. The first-string defensive line featured Caden Curry and Kenyatta Jackson as the ends with Eddrick Houston and Kayden McDonald as the tackles.
