Virginia Tech football: Defense beats offense in annual spring game

Spring football is over for the Virginia Tech Hokies, as the defense defeated the offense 50-21 to end the spring session.

New Virginia Tech defense coordinator Sam Siefkes’ unit scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and really never looked back. Linebacker George Balance kicked off scoring with a 22-yard fumble recovery that he returned for a touchdown. Shortly after, cornerback Dante Lovett intercepted a pass and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown.

Virginia Tech’s scoring system for the spring game favors the defense, with three-and-outs, turnovers, sacks, tackles, and touchdowns all equaling points for the defense. Another factor that helped the defense was that the Hokies were without starting quarterback Kyron Drones and backup Pop Watson.

Pry ruled Drones out for the remainder of the spring, saying he needed a minor procedure. Pry said after the game that things went well, and he sees no problem with Drones being ready by fall camp. Watson was ruled out for Saturday’s scrimmage with what Pry termed a “soft-tissue” injury. His injury was not serious.

That left redshirt freshman Davi Belfort to start at quarterback with a pair of true freshmen, Kelden Ryan and A.J. Brand, also receiving plenty of action. Pry was impressed with all the signal-callers, noting that Ryan and Brand should still be in high school.

Tech’s biggest play came when junior wide receiver Ayden Greene tossed a 57-yard touchdown to Tennessee transfer Cam Seldon. Greene also hauled in a 12-yard touchdown reception. It was a good day for Virginia Tech’s projected No. 1 wide receiver next season.

Brand also scored on a 12-yard touchdown run for the offense.

Other true freshmen made plays, too, as defensive end Zeke Chinwike had a sack and cornerback Jojo Crim had an interception.

These three Hokies received awards…
