Wisconsin landed a commitment from class of 2026 quarterback Ryan Hopkins on Sunday.
Hopkins chose the Badgers over other top contenders Missouri, Cal and Duke, according to On3’s Hayes Fawcett. His offer sheet also includes Arizona, Michigan State, Kentucky, Oklahoma State, UCF, Utah, Washington and Virginia.
247Sports currently lists the Santa Ana, California, native as a three-recruit, ranked specifically as the No. 528 overall player in the class of 2026, No. 29 quarterback and No. 47 recruit from California. Despite the measured rating, Hopkins is currently the starting quarterback at high school football powerhouse Mater Dei, which has sent several quarterbacks to the NFL, including Bryce Young (via Alabama), Matt Leinart (via USC) and Matt Barkley (via USC).
Hopkins is the Badgers’ fifth commitment in the class of 2026, joining defensive lineman Carmelow Reed, wide receiver Tayshon Bardo, cornerback Carsen Eloms and offensive lineman Benjamin Novak. After his addition, Wisconsin’s class sits at No. 39 nationally and No. 10 in the Big Ten. The program is still in search of its first blue-chip commitment in the group.
Hopkins’ commitment is notable because it is Wisconsin’s first pledge from a high school quarterback since the hire of offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes, plus the first since Kenny Guiton’s move from wide receivers to quarterbacks coach. Those two coaches and the program’s talent pipeline at the position will play a major role in the team’s on-field success over the next few seasons.
The current quarterback room of senior Billy Edwards Jr, sophomore Danny O’Neil and freshman Carter Smith will likely define Grimes’ tenure with the program.
