BOONVILLE — Jonathan Batts was named the next head football coach at Boonville High School.
The hire was approved during the Warrick County School Corp. board meeting on Monday. The long-time assistant coach takes over one of the more consistent programs in the Pocket Athletic Conference. Boonville went 6-6 last season and lost in the Class 4A sectional championship.
Batts, a Kentucky Wesleyan College graduate, is currently an English teacher at the high school. He primarily coached on defense under former coach Darin Ward. Batts is also listed as an assistant boys basketball coach for the Pioneers.
Ward stepped down in March following a 10-year run at his alma mater. He only had one losing record and concluded with 59 victories including the Big Eight championship in 2018. Boonville reached the sectional championship game three times in the last decade – the program hasn’t won a postseason title in 21 years.
The Pioneers return four All-Pocket Athletic Conference selections in quarterback/defensive back Grant Davis, tight end Tyler Klaner (Northern Illinois commit), defensive lineman Axton Hudson and running back Nolan McKinney.
This is the seventh football coaching hire in Southwestern Indiana this offseason joining Derek Hart (Jasper), Joey Paridaen (Tecumseh), Cody Hess (Mater Dei), Zac Nero (North), Brandon Neighbors (South Spencer) and Derek Archer (Princeton).
