Auburn football: Hugh Freeze talks roster management, transfer portal

Auburn football coach Hugh Freeze discusses roster management and the spring transfer portal window after A-Day on April 12 at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

For the first time in two seasons, former Auburn football assistant Noel Mazzone is returning to the sidelines, though his new job will send him to relatively uncharted waters.

Mazzone will be the offensive coordinator for the UFL’s Memphis Showboats, the franchise announced Wednesday. The Showboats, who are helmed by interim head coach Jim Turner, are three games into their 2025 season and still searching for their first win.

Mazzone is two-plus decades removed from a three-year stint at Tommy Tuberville’s offensive coordinator on the Plains. The Tigers went 21-15 in that span, peaking with a 9-4 record and SEC championship game appearance in 2000.

Mazzone followed Tuberville to Auburn from Ole Miss, where he served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Mazzone coached exclusively at the college level until 2006, when he took over as wide receivers coach for the New York Jets.

Since then, Mazzone has coached at all three levels, but his latest ventures have taken him down non-NFL avenues at the professional level. He coordinated offenses for two different franchises in the now-defunct reiteration of the USFL, which folded into the XFL for the 2024 season.
