Clemson football strength coach Joey Batson to retire after 29th season

CLEMSON — Joey Batson, the Clemson football strength and conditioning coach since 1997, will retire after the 2025 season, the school confirmed April 17.

Tigers coach Dabo Swinney will hire Clemson’s first strength and conditioning coach in nearly three decades.

Since 2022, Swinney has hired five assistants: defensive tackles coach Nick Eason (2022), offensive coordinator Garrett Riley (2023), offensive line coach Matt Luke (2024), defensive ends coach Chris Rumph (2024) and defensive coordinator Tom Allen (2025). All were not at Clemson prior to joining the staff, but all except Allen have generated immense results to their respective groups.

Batson is entering his 29th season at this position with Clemson and 40th year as a strength and conditioning coach at the college level. He has served under three Clemson coaches: Tommy West, Tommy Bowden and Swinney, helping Tigers players win two national championships and nine ACC championships.

Batson received a one-year contract extension in February to increase his deal’s length through Jan. 31, 2027. He earns $625,000 annually.
