The spring transfer portal window officially opened on Wednesday. While things have been quiet in the portal for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, former Huskers have been busy.
Former Nebraska linebacker Mikai Gbayor transferred to the North Carolina Tar Heels on Wednesday. Gbayor first entered the transfer portal in December 2024 and committed to the Missouri Tigers at the time.
The New Jersey native spent three years at Nebraska before having a breakout 2024 season. He appeared in 12 games with 11 starts and had 49 tackles, 6.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, three pass breakups, and two fumble recoveries.
Gbayor was one of the top ten recruits in the state of New Jersey for the class of 2021. He chose Nebraska over the Kentucky Wildcats, the Michigan State Spartans, the Ole Miss Rebels, and the West Virginia Mountaineers.
Now, he will be able to play for legendary coach Bill Belichick and his son and defensive coordinator, Steve Belichick. This represents a new start for the linebacker, who is looking to build on a successful campaign last year.
He will have one year of eligibility remaining.
