Championship edition: Swampcast discusses Florida basketball, spring football
The Sun’s Kevin Brockway and Noah Ram reflects on Florda basketball’s national title and UF’s football spring game with Edgar Thompson of the Orlando Sentinel.
In this week’s Swampcast, the Gainesville Sun’s Kevin Brockway and Noah Ram catch up on a busy two weeks that included Florida basketball winning its third national title in school history and Florida football ending spring drills with a high-scoring spring game.
Brockway said he grew to believe in the chances for the Florida Gators to win their third national title after wins over No. 1 Tennessee and No. 1 Auburn during the regular season.
“When you get the No. 1 seed, which Florida did, you tend to think the path becomes easier,” Brockway said. “But looking back at Florida’s draw, UConn, you get the two-time defending national champions, Danny Hurley, who has been around the block … Texas Tech a very good coach in Grant McCasland in the Elite Eight, then you’ve got Auburn, Bruce Pearl, one of your mentors in the Final Four, Kelvin Sampson, Houston in the national championship, that’s a lot of high-powered coaching that you are facing, a lot of veteran coaching along the way.
“Todd Golden and his staff, to their credit, slayed them all. They found ways to win. The were smart, they were crafty, the came up with adjustments in the second half.”
Ram wonders how well Florida can sustain success after its national championship season. The Gators are expected to return their starting frontcourt but will lose their three senior starting guards ― Alijah Martin, Will Richard and All-American Walter Clayton Jr.
UF also is losing two assistant coaches, Kevin Hovde (Columbia) and John Andrzejek (Campbell), to head coaching jobs.
