MADISON – One of Wisconsin’s top pickups from the transfer portal last winter is gone without playing a down for the Badgers.

Tanner Koziol, a tight end who played at Ball State last season, re-entered the transfer portal, according to 247sports.

He is the second player Wisconsin picked up from the portal in December who is no longer with the team. Idaho transfer Mark Hamper, a receiver, announced his intention to enter the portal Tuesday.

Koziol has deleted any references to his commitment to the Badgers from his page on X and wasn’t at practice for the past couple of weeks.

Koziol, listed as 6-foot-6 and 257 pounds on the Badgers spring roster, caught 94 passes for 839 yards and eight touchdowns last season. He averaged 8.93 yards per catch and wsa a three-time all-conference selection in the Mid-American Conference.

The transfer portal opened Wednesday and closes April 25, which coincides with the Badgers final four spring practices.

“This isn’t for everyone,” Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell said. “This is a grown-ass man’s league and this is a grown man’s game and if guys don’t understand that and this isn’t the right thing for them then it is what it is.

“I think that is what’s a little harder on some. But sometimes having options isn’t always the best thing for guys to grow but sometimes it’s the best thing for them.”
