Curt Cignetti wants players approaching spring practice with ‘great sense of urgency’

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana football’s spring game is turning into an annual showcase for the team’s running backs.
The Hoosiers had 33 carries for 178 yards with a touchdown in the offense’s 31-23 win over the defense. They combined for four carries of 10-plus yards and set up scores on multiple drives with explosive plays.
“It’s an explosive run game,” Indiana offensive lineman Pat Coogan said after the scrimmage. “We can come at you with the ground and pound then like you saw tonight we can also pop a few for big chunk plays…I’m super excited about the progress we made and where we are headed. It’s going to be a great run game, for sure.”
Indiana came out last year’s spring game feeling much the same way.
The success Justice Ellison and Ty Son Lawton had in the scrimmage foreshadowed their record-breaking season in 2024 as the first running back duo in program history to run for 10 or more touchdowns in the same season.
Indiana has a trio of backs — Kaelon Black, Maryland transfer Roman Hemby and UAB transfer Lee Beebe Jr. — vying to replace their production. They had an even workload in the scrimmage with each back carrying the ball eight times.
Black took a backseat to Ellison and Lawton last year, but he made plays when he was in the lineup. He averaged 3.9 yards after contact, forced 16 missed tackles on just 73 carries and had seven runs of 10-plus yards.
