DURHAM — Duke football was the only school in the Triangle to host a spring game in 2025.
North Carolina held an open practice for fans on April 12 at Kenan Stadium, but Bill Belichick’s Tar Heels took the field without names or numbers on their jerseys. N.C. State didn’t have anything during its spring period, opting out of an open scrimmage or practice for fans.
College football programs are allowed 15 on-field practice sessions over a 34-day period in the spring semester. Teams have traditionally ended that practice period with spring games, but many programs have decided to move away from that format.
Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Texas and LSU are among the notable big-time football schools not hosting traditional spring games.
So why did head coach Manny Diaz and the Blue Devils decide to buck the trend and stick with the traditional format?
“People talk around the country about the value of spring games,” Diaz said after the Blue team (offense) earned a 38-26 win against the White team (defense).
