Michigan football signee wins prestigious high school award

Bryce Underwood isn’t the only new Michigan football player winning big-time awards.

On the heels of the Wolverines quarterback taking home hardware equivalent to high school football’s Heisman Trophy, another incoming Michigan player is being honored, albeit more regionally. Unlike Underwood, Washington (D.C.) Gonzaga four-star safety Kainoa Winston isn’t on campus just yet, as he’s set to arrive over the summer as a regular enrollee. But the elite defensive back, who chose Michigan over Penn State, is being honored by the DC Touchdown Club, having won the 2025 Touchdown Club football player of the year award, the organization announced on Friday.

While it might not be a national award, the Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia region is one of the most talent-rich in the entire country when it comes to producing top-tier recruits. He joins two other four-star safeties in the class in Jordan Young (who enrolled early) and Elijah Dotson (who didn’t), along with two other defensive backs in corners Shamari Earls and Jayden Sanders.

Earls is already on campus as well while Sanders won’t arrive until summer.
