USC plays it safe with Lake McRee at spring camp

USC makes prudent decision with Lake McRee

USC football still has one more week left of spring practice. For the final week, however, they will be without one of their veteran leaders, as on Tuesday, head coach Lincoln Riley announced that the Trojans will be shutting down redshirt senior tight end for the remainder of spring ball.

Riley said that McRee had been dealing with several nagging injuries, which was the reason for the decision. However, he did not specify what injuries McRee had.

McRee has led USC in receiving among tight ends each of the past three years, while also serving as a valuable blocking presence. Last season, McRee caught 24 passes for 245 yards.

With McRee out, it will be a chance for USC’s younger tight ends to step up. Most notable among that group will be Walker Lyons, who showed major potential as a true freshman in 2024 and will look to play a bigger role in the Trojans’ offense in 2025.

USC has four spring practices remaining. The Trojans will practice on Saturday, before wrapping up spring camp with practices on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday of next week.
