UMass RB CJ Hester commits to Michigan football

The spring window has been open now for just a few days, but Michigan football got its second commitment of the transfer portal cycle shortly after the spring game.

The Wolverines needed some help at running back after losing Ben Hall earlier in the week, meaning that the maize and blue lost Donovan Edwards, Kalel Mullings, Tavierre Dunlap, Cole Cabana, and then Hall this offseason. Though the Wolverines brought in Donovan Johnson and will see Jasper Parker over the summer, there are some concerns about the former’s durability, and relying on the other true freshman, Micah Ka’apana, and Bryson Kuzdzal doesn’t give Michigan a lot of options.

On Saturday, the maize and blue added another name in former UMass and Western Michigan running back CJ Hester.

A former three-star from Cincinnati (Ohio) Wyoming in the 2023 class, Hester originally started in Kalamazoo, where Lou Esposito was coaching, before transferring to Massachusetts last year. As a sophomore, Hester carried the ball 119 times for 529 yards and four touchdowns. The year before, he carried the ball 28 times for 132 yards and two touchdowns. His best game a year ago came against SEC powerhouse Georgia, when he carried the ball 15 times for 74 yards and a touchdown.

Hester is the second running back to come to Ann Arbor this offseason via the transfer portal with Justice Haynes coming aboard from Alabama in December.
