Texas A&M football should pursue Houston transfer safety A.J. Haulcy

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko has a plan regarding the spring transfer portal, but it isn’t completely clear. On paper, for the Aggies to avoid attrition during the 2025 season, the defensive tackle rotation needs added size/depth. The wide receiver room is faster and more versatile, but it needs another red zone target with the size to take advantage of smaller matchups after Noah Thomas transferred to Georgia.

However, the Aggies’ safety room is still relatively unproven compared to recent years, possessing more potential than guaranteed. It is led by senior Bryce Anderson, Dalton Brooks, Marcus Ratcliffe, Jared Kerr, and sophomore Myles Davis, who has stood out the most this spring.

Texas A&M’s tackling issues and mental mistakes, including multiple late hits from Brooks, became more than an annoyance. At the same time, Bryce Anderson’s overall poor play could be blamed on his lack of experience at the position, entering college as a high school quarterback.

Defensive assistant Lyle Hemphill was brought in to fix the technical issues at the linebacker, cornerback, and safety levels. Elko could use another proven safety; one just entered the transfer portal this weekend.

Standout safety A.J. Haulcy is one of the top defensive backs in the country, coming off an impressive season where he recorded 74 tackles and a career-high five interceptions, just a year after recording an eye-popping 97 tackles in 2023.

Haulcy is a plug-and-play starter and potential game-changer, which would immediately make the Aggie secondary one of the more complete units in the SEC. Mike Elko has already proven his recruiting chops this offseason. While Haulcy will have plenty of suitors, the Houston connection combined with playing in the SEC should make the Aggies a competitor for his commitment.
