STILLWATER — Oklahoma State’s quarterback competition has been reduced from a four-man race to three.
Redshirt freshman Maealiuaki Smith is entering the transfer portal, as reported by ESPN on Monday.
The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Smith was part of this spring’s four-man quarterback race with Garret Rangel, Zane Flores and Hauss Hejny, but instead, will seek out a new home in the portal.
Smith put up decent numbers in the Orange-White game Saturday, going 6 of 10 for 54 yards. He rushed for the White team’s only touchdown of the day.
His departure means the Cowboys will likely try to add a fourth quarterback to the roster, but that becomes difficult with three players already established ahead of whoever the newcomer might be.
Smith appeared in four games, starting the final two, as a true freshman last season, going 44 of 74 (59.5%) for 489 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions.
Smith had been the scout team quarterback much of the season, but when the Cowboys benched starter Alan Bowman, he moved up the depth chart, eventually taking over as the starter in late November.
He was 26 of 35 for 316 yards with two touchdowns, plus a rushing score, in the Cowboys’ loss to Texas Tech in his first start. But he, like the rest of the team, struggled mightily in a 52-0 loss at Colorado the next week. Smith was 11 of 29 for 70 yards with two interceptions.
Originally from Sacramento, California, Smith will have four years of eligibility remaining wherever he lands.
