Bloomington’s Race Stewart and Sam Young jump in football portal

Bloomington North grad Race Stewart and South grad Sam Young play on opposite sides of the trenches in college football, but both are headed in the same direction this time: out.

Both recently put their names in the transfer portal.

Stewart, a walk-on at Indiana University for three years, is looking to gain playing time in his last year of eligibility. Young, on scholarship at Division II Central State in Ohio after redshirting his freshman year at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, is also looking for a fresh start.

Young was a starter in his two years with the Marauders, but wins were few and far between.

Stewart, now 6-foot-3 and 302 pounds, played in just one game at IU, getting a sack in the win over Indiana State in 2023. He thought that might lead to better things. He had worked his way up the depth chart, but when new coach Curt Cignetti arrived, new players via the transfer portal blocked his way into the two-deep just as he was working his way into the starting rotation.

Stewart, a Class 5A All-State lineman in 2020, stuck it out for four years (redshirting his second year) but wants to get on the field.

“As a freshman, it was all new to me being in a Big Ten program,” Stewart said. “Then as a sophomore, I saw myself competing with some of the starters and thought I might stick around.

“But you know how football is in the Big Ten with the portal and new guys coming in. I got to a point with a year and a half left, I might as well get my degree. The main thing was to get my degree.”

He’ll graduate in May as a tourism, hospitality and event management major. He’s willing to either join a graduate program or go after another undergraduate degree. As a nose tackle, what he learned at IU…
