Jackson Cantwell, the No. 1 football prospect in the 2026 class, updates his recruitment ahead of his upcoming decison.

During a visit to Eugene, Oregon, last summer, Jackson Cantwell remembers an elevator door opening and seeing Ducks football coach Dan Lanning walking down a hallway with about 50 coaches walking behind him. They were there to meet with the five-star offensive tackle.

Visiting the Pacific Northwest while competing in the Nike Nationals track and field event, in which he won the national championship in the shot put as a sophomore, he was blown away by Lanning’s recruiting pitch and everything the University of Oregon had to offer.

“To quote my dad, ‘Dan Lanning could probably sell ice to an Eskimo,'” Cantwell said right after the trip.

Oregon remains one of four schools hoping to land the commitment from the nation’s No. 1 recruit when he announces his decision on May 13. He’s choosing between the Ducks, Georgia, Miami (Florida) and Ohio State.

Oregon thought it had the advantage of leaving a final impression on the offensive tackle when he visits the program’s spring game. It will mark his second trip to Eugene and his first to Autzen Stadium in a game-like environment.

Cantwell announced Wednesday that he was delaying his commitment to May 13, rather than the previously announced April 30. He also added an unofficial visit to Georgia on May 10.

Still, Oregon hopes this week’s visit will be enough to convince him to be a Duck.

“I’ve been needing to get back to Oregon just to kind of confirm things,” Cantwell said.

As curious as the timing was, Cantwell said there’s no reason to read into it. He’ll be on Oregon’s campus in the days leading up to his decision, which he describes as a trip to gather information. He’s been on multiple visits to…
