QB Brendon Lewis’ journey from Colorado to Nevada to Memphis football

It finally hit Brendon Lewis early in 2024 — time was running out.

Like the rest of the Nevada football team, Lewis hadn’t had a great 2023 season. The Wolf Pack went 2-10, coach Ken Wilson was fired and everyone’s future was in flux.

As he tells it, that’s when his mentality flipped.

“I realized I don’t have a lot of time playing football left,” Lewis said. “So I’ve got to maximize these opportunities. So I just really lived, breathed, ate, everything, football, football, football.”

He went on the attack in 2024, throwing for a career-high 2,290 yards and 16 touchdowns, and rushing for 775 yards and eight touchdowns. That personal success made him a hot commodity in the transfer portal, and he committed to Memphis for his final season of collegiate eligibility.

Fans will get their first look at Lewis on April 26 during the Tigers’ spring game at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. And it’ll be the first time they’ll see a quarterback not named Seth Henigan under center since 2020.

“He’s going to be a nightmare for opponents,” said his high school coach, Matt Nally. “But he’s going to be a dream for Memphis.”

Lewis was always a football player, but he wasn’t always a quarterback. He didn’t play the position until middle school, when his team needed one and his dad, Brian, decided to give him a shot.

Brian wanted to find the best high school team for Brendon, so he moved his family from McKinney, Texas to nearby Melissa. It was actually Kevin Murray, the father of Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray, who told Brian to prioritize playing time over a school that played in a higher classification. Brendon had trained with Murray as a middle schooler, and Brian was confident in his decision to go to Melissa.
