Ohio State football won … again.
Ryan Day’s defending national champions didn’t actually have a game Thursday. But the Buckeyes showed why they ripped through four playoff games: they have the best players.
The NFL thought enough of Ohio State to take four of its best in the first round of the NFL draft.
That was the most of any school, edging Georgia, Michigan and Texas by one.
The SEC had the most overall picks with 15, followed by the Big Ten with 11, That left just six first-rounders for the rest of the conferences. Kind of how the College Football Playoff is working out.
Don’t forget, Ohio State’s best player, receiver Jeremiah Smith, isn’t eligible for the draft until 2027. If he remains healthy, mark him down at No. 1 that year.
This time, Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State and Oregon had all the Big Ten first-rounders. If the league wants to pass the SEC in that category, there needs to contributions from more teams. Maybe in 2026.
Big Ten commish Tony Petitti shouldn’t feel too bad about finishing second. His conference has won the last two national titles and has a great chance to make it a threepeat.
