There are a lot of words that can be used to describe Steve Stutsman’s emotions as he awaits to see which team will select his son in this week’s NFL Draft.
One word that cannot be used, however, is surprised. He has seen what Danny Stutsman has done through his time as the former Foundation Academy athlete and star Oklahoma linebacker. Dad knows what he went through at each level of football progression to put himself in position to be an NFL Draft pick.
“I’m very proud of him, but I just know who he is, and having been a part of the coaching staff when he was in high school, I know his work ethic and how he is,” Stutsman said. “I’m not shocked. He’s done what he set out to do.”
As he awaits his son’s NFL destination, Stutsman talked Wednesday about the excitement.
“It’s surreal. It’s a dream come true,” Stutsman said. “He’s worked hard. He’s had a heck of a collegiate career. He’s done everything the right way and now he’s about to realize his dreams and go play with the big boys, so I couldn’t be happier for him.”
There was a time when the first phrase that would follow the mention of the name Danny Stutsman would be “Danny who?” Stutsman played at little Class 2A Foundation Academy, which only had 892 students — Kindergarten through 12th grade — during Stutsman’s senior year.
One man, however, knew what kind of talent he had in Stutsman. Foundation coach Brad Lord used Stutsman at every position he could. He played linebacker, tight end, wide receiver and running back. He would have played line if he had to.
During the region championship game against Victory Christian his senior season (2020), Stutsman scored the only touchdown, a 70-yard run, in the 7-0 win. He had 13 carries for 151 yards, and also caught three passes for 24 yards. On defense, he had 11…
