Michigan WR Donaven McCulley to wear No. 1 jersey

The No. 1 jersey at Michigan football on offense is supposed to mean something. But it always hasn’t.

The coveted solo digit is supposed to go to the Wolverines’ top receiver, a tradition that spanned from players such as Anthony Carter to David Terrell to Braylon Edwards. But the maize and blue have rarely had that enigmatic wideout since the Lloyd Carr era — though Roman Wilson did a good job wearing the jersey in 2023.

Now, it looks like it’s getting something of a refresh.

All spring ball, we’ve heard about how good former Indiana receiver Donaven McCulley is, and we saw it in the spring game, when he came down with his sole target, a snag in double coverage for 25 yards. From what it looks like, McCulley will now be switching from No. 13 to No. 1 in his sole season with the maize and blue.

A former quarterback, McCulley only appeared in four games and had two catches for 21 yards and a touchdown for the Hoosiers last season. However, the year before, he led IU with 48 catches for 644 yards and six touchdowns. While those numbers are less than Wilson had in 2023, Michigan did have 15 games compared to Indiana’s 12 in 2023.

Michigan has tended to not have 1,000-yard receivers, but has generally produced pass catchers who have accumulated 600 yards or more. Ronnie Bell came just shy of 900 yards in 2022 as did Amara Darboh in 2016.
