Tigers in pursuit of elite defensive tackle transfer

LSU football is looking to make a big addition to its transfer portal class.

According to Max Olson, USF defensive tackle transfer arrived in Baton Rouge on Thursday for a multi-day visit. Gooden is the top-ranked transfer defensive lineman still on the board.

PFF ranked Gooden as the top graded defensive tackle in the AAC last fall. He racked up 35 pressures and made 15 stops. Gooden’s career started at Wake Forest in 2022, but 2024 was a breakout campaign for the defensive linemen.

Gooden would join a talented group of defensive tackles at LSU led by Jacobian Guillory, Dominick McKinley, and Ahmad Breaux. Defensive line isn’t a pressing need for LSU, but it’s a position that requires depth. Guillory is returning from a season-ending injury, and McKinley and Breaux are just sophomores. LSU doesn’t quite know what it will get from that trio. Gooden provides insurance.

Earlier this month, LSU head coach Brian Kelly said he liked where the roster was and wouldn’t be surprised if LSU remained put in the spring portal window. But with a talent like Gooden, LSU is jumping at the opportunity.

Gooden played 573 snaps with USF in 2024. That’s what LSU defensive coordinator Blake Baker is looking for in the transfer portal. Baker said LSU has talent, but the roster needed guys with proven experience.
