MADISON – It didn’t take long for Wisconsin to find another veteran tight end to help its transition to Jeff Grimes’ offense.
Missouri State transfer Lance Mason has committed to the Badgers for the upcoming season. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound tight end caught 34 passes for 590 yards, a 17.35-yard average, with six touchdowns to help his team finish 8-4 overall and 6-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference (fourth-place tie).
News of Mason commitment came from On3. That post was then shared by the accounts of Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell and Mason.
The addition of Mason offsets the portal loss of Tanner Koziol. Koziol committed to Wisconsin in December after a standout season at Ball State, but after a few spring practices left the team and later re-entered the portal. He committed to Houston.
Mason, who hails from Rockwell, Texas, enjoyed a spike in his production last season. He went from averaging 9.5 yards in 22 catches during his first two seasons to leading all FCS tight ends in yards per catch.
He received honorable mention on the Associated Press All-America team.
He joins a program where his position is expected to take on added importance in the offense of Grimes, who is in his first-year as coordinator The position has been led by junior Tucker Ashcraft and running back/fulback-turn-tight end Jackson Acker. The next player on the depth chart after spring practice is redshirt freshman Grant Stec.
