Nick Saban shares ‘the biggest recruiting mistake’ he made at Alabama football

Nick Saban did not seem to make many mistakes with Alabama football. But early in the second round of the 2025 NFL draft, the Crimson Tide legend admitted one he made on the recruiting trail.

When LSU tight end Mason Taylor was selected with the 42nd overall pick in the second round by the New York Jets, Saban shared Taylor’s recruiting backstory, one Saban would like to forget.

“This is the biggest recruiting mistake we ever made,” Saban said on ABC during the 2025 NFL draft. “This is the best guy we had in camp. He beats us and knocks us out of the playoffs. … We bring him in and we shuffle around on if we’re going to offer him or not. And then he commits to LSU. And then we try and get him. I mean, this guy is an outstanding player and he’s got the right mental makeup.”

Saban called Taylor “my favorite all-around tight end,” one who can play everywhere from inline to H to wide receiver.

In three seasons with LSU, Taylor beat Alabama once: a 2022 overtime win at home where he had three catches for 36 yards and a touchdown. Taylor had 10 catches for 105 yards and a touchdown against Alabama.
