Not unexpectedly, the first two rounds of the NFL draft came and went with no Texas Tech football players selected. That figures to come soon enough with three Red Raiders ranked highly enough in most pre-draft analyses to be taken at some point.
During Friday night’s second round, however, three players with Texas Tech connections, either directly or through close family ties, were taken in a span of eight picks:
∎ The New Orleans Saints drafted Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough 40th overall. Shough spent the 2021 through 2023 seasons with Texas Tech, winning the starting job each year only to miss multiple games each year with injuries.
Last year with Louisville, he played in 12 games and threw for 3,195 yards and 23 touchdowns. The Cardinals capped a 9-4 season with a Sun Bowl victory over Washington.
∎ The New York Jets drafted LSU tight end Mason Taylor 42nd overall. Taylor’s a nephew of Pro Football Hall of Famer Zach Thomas, the former all-American linebacker for the Red Raiders. He caught 55 passes for 546 yards and two touchdowns last season.
Taylor is a son of Hall of Fame defensive end Jason Taylor and Thomas’ sister, Katina.
∎ The Arizona Cardinals took Michigan cornerback Will Johnson 47th overall.
Johnson is a younger brother of Kayli Johnson, a former Texas Tech track and field athlete who was a first-team all-American in the shot put in 2021 and Big 12 champion in 2022. She earned a master’s degree in sports management at Tech while working in the…
