Branson Combs signs with Jacksonville Jaguars as undrafted free agent

EVANSVILLE — Branson Combs has an official opportunity to become a professional football player.

The Memorial High School graduate will sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent. Combs spent his final collegiate season, his only year at the Football Bowl Subdivision level, with Wake Forest. The news was confirmed via the school Saturday night.

The last player from Evansville to make an NFL roster was Deke Cooper of North in 2007.

Combs, a linebacker, was a multi-sport star with the Tigers. One of the top two-way players in Indiana his final two years, he ranks sixth all-time in state history for receiving yards. Combs holds the school record in all major receiving categories and caught 75 passes for 1,517 yards and 24 touchdowns as a senior.

He helped Memorial reach the state championship game twice ― the Tigers defeated Brebeuf Jesuit in 2017. Combs was also an All-Southern Indiana Athletic Conference selection in baseball and multiple-year starter in basketball.

Combs spent the next five years at Southern Illinois. Following a redshirt, he played the shortened 2020 season at wide receiver before switching to defense. The Memorial grad developed into a two-time all-conference linebacker in the Missouri Valley Conference. That success continued with a transfer to Wake Forest this past season.

Combs had 94 total tackles (second on the team), two sacks, one forced fumble and one interception for the Demon Deacons. His best stretch came late in the season with double-digit tackles in three straight games against Stanford, California and North Carolina. Combs registered a season-high 14 stops against Virginia and UNC.
