Florida football QB DJ Lagway back throwing in offseason workouts

Championship edition: Swampcast discusses Florida basketball, spring football

The Sun’s Kevin Brockway and Noah Ram reflects on Florda basketball’s national title and UF’s football spring game with Edgar Thompson of the Orlando Sentinel.

Florida football starting quarterback DJ Lagway took another positive step in his return from an offseason shoulder issue on Monday.

Lagway posted a video of himself throwing the football on his Instagram story, the first public signs of him throwing since the end of the 2024 season.

The 6-foot-3, 241-pound Lagway did not throw during open portions of spring workouts with the Florida Gators and appeared in just four snaps during UF’s spring game, handing the ball off all four times. Following the game, Florida coach Billy Napier said Lagway would resume throwing in two weeks.

Napier said before the start of spring drills that Lagway would be limited during spring drills due to lower body and shoulder issues.

“Our intentions here are to be very smart,” Napier said last March. “I do think he’ll be limited in throwing activities, but he’ll participate in all practices otherwise. We’ve done a lot of homework with the things he went through as a player but he was an absolute warrior and a great competitor that showed toughness.

UF’s success in 2025 hinge in part on the health of Lagway, who went 6-1 as a starter for the Florida Gators and earned Gasparilla Bowl MVP honors against Tulane. The 2003 Gatorade High School Player of the Year from Willis, Texas, Lagway lived up to his billing as a true freshman for UF, passing for 1,915 yards with 12 TDs to nine interceptions on the season.
