Some outlets are starting to believe that Michigan football could surprise in 2025. But others aren’t as hyped up about the maize and blue.
One year removed from a national championship season, some feel as if they sank too much capital into believing that the Wolverines wouldn’t fall back as hard as they did in 2024. Yet, Michigan went 8-5, beat Ohio State and Alabama, and they did so while losing nearly the whole team to the NFL, both coordinators, and the head coach.
247Sports just released its Big Ten power rankings now that spring ball is over and it has Michigan football as the fifth-best team, as of current, in the conference.
5. MICHIGAN WOLVERINESWere the final three games of last season a harbinger of a bright future under Sherrone Moore? The blowout win over Northwestern, rivalry stunner against Ohio State and impressive bowl game triumph over Alabama made the Wolverines look like a completely different team from the one that took the field for much of 2024. The final win was particularly interesting because Michigan dominated the Crimson Tide without its host of early-round draftees. Throw No. 1 overall recruit Bryce Underwood onto the roster as a much-needed lift at quarterback, and suddenly Michigan is back in the Big Ten’s top tier.
Michigan is behind No. 4 Illinois, No. 3 Oregon, No. 2 Ohio State, and No. 1 Penn State.
Ohio State is interesting because it’s in a nearly identical situation to the Wolverines, but it did retain the head coach and also has a couple of quarterbacks in waiting. Oregon loses its quarterback and star receivers, but still has a lot of talent. Penn State is attempting to replicate Michigan and Ohio State’s success by bringing back many of its draft-eligible players who could have gone, but will it be enough?
