Transfer portal season is upon us, and Deion Sanders and Colorado made a major splash Wednesday morning.
The Buffaloes landed three transfer commitments, including a pair of former Tennessee players in offensive tackle Larry Johnson III, defensive back John Slaughter, along with Incarnate Word running back DeKalon Taylor.
All three players announced their commitments to the Buffs on social media within an hour of each other.
Slaughter appeared in 23 games in two seasons with the Volunteers but never became an entrenched defensive starter. He finished last season with five tackles and recorded his first career interception.
Johnson is a massive addition for the Buffs in more ways than one. Not only is he a huge human at 6-foot-7, 348 pounds, but the tackle comes to Boulder with a great chance to earn the starting right tackle spot, after playing in only eight games in two years in Knoxville.
Taylor becomes the first of supposedly two running backs that Sanders hopes to add this spring. The Texas native, whose nickname is “Trackhawk,” was an All-Conference selection at both running back and returner. He rushed for 909 yards and nine touchdowns in 11 games last season. Taylor was an explosive runner, averaging six yards per carry, including a 97-yard touchdown against Northern Arizona. In the passing game, Taylor racked up 22 receptions for 122 yards and averaged 15.1 yards per kick return.
Out of the three, Johnson appears the likeliest to earn a starting role, but Taylor, with his explosiveness and kick return ability, should carve out a role for the Buffs in 2025 and perhaps even challenge Micah Welch for the starting spot.
