In abbreviated spring, FSU rediscovered its edge, Mike Norvell says

It was the simplest and most somber audible of his career. When tragedy befell FSU’s campus in the waning stages of spring ball, coach Mike Norvell deferred to perspective instead of his play sheet.

He ended spring workouts then and there, though the 13 practices were two shy of the 15 permitted by the NCAA each spring. Technically, FSU could’ve squeezed in one more practice (the NCAA mandates the 15 workouts must be held in a 34-day window), but Norvell knew there was only one call to make in the wake of the mass shooting that paralyzed a community.

“It’s extremely difficult for everybody involved that was affected by the tragedy,” Norvell told Tallahassee-based reporters early Wednesday morning in his spring wrap-up. “That was our focus, just being able to be with our team, everybody just being empathetic … for just everything that was going on around campus.

“So we made the decision that we were going to conclude spring and move forward with our meetings, and as guys were preparing for the last week of school and finals this week, I definitely think that was the right decision to be made.”

Still, Norvell indicated the abridged spring yielded optimism for 2025. Specifically, he was pleased with the progress of his quarterbacks, the versatility of his cornerbacks and, perhaps most significantly, the signs of grit mostly missing during the distastrous 2024 season.

“We talked a lot in January and then even right before spring practice began about an edge that was necessary,” Norvell said.

“To see that, and how guys competed, to see that in how guys upheld the standard, pushed themselves, I thought that we really got a great glimpse of the potential of what this team can be.”
