A roster limit of 105 players may or may not materialize for the 2025 season, but the Texas Tech football team is moving in that direction anyway with four more players gone from the roster this week.
Offensive linemen Caleb Rodkey and Maurice Rodriques have medically retired, a Tech athletics spokesman said Wednesday. Tight end Jalen Brattain’s eligibility expires with the spring semester, and he didn’t receive the eligibility-clock extension he needs to play in the 2025 season, the spokesman said.
Quarterback-running back Jaden Morris also is off the roster.
Tech now projects to have 107 players for the 2025 season, counting 10 freshman signees who will arrive after the spring semester. Included in the 107 are the recent additions of defensive edge David Bailey from Stanford, center Cash Cleveland from Colorado, slot receiver Roy Alexander from Incarnate Word and former Tech receiver Micah Hudson, who briefly departed to Texas A&M over the winter.
The Red Raiders continue recruiting the NCAA transfer portal.
Tech coach Joey McGuire acknowledged in December the likelihood of having to cut players to get to an expected 105 limit, though that might be less of a necessity beyond the roster trimming that normally happens after spring practice.
