When high school football players join the college ranks, the majority of them do so somewhere close to home.
That is true for Holland Christian quarterback Evan Abberger, who committed to Kalamazoo College, less than an hour away from Holland.
But occasionally, players stretch their nets further away to try to find the best opportunity.
For Holland Christian’s Gabe Konfara, that reach ended up on the other side of the country.
Konfara committed to play at Snow College in Utah, one of the top junior college programs in the country.
“Just knowing where home is next year feels really good and it’s just nice to be at peace with my decision. I hope to bring my leadership and talents to Snow, and I hope that there I’m able to develop into a better version of myself,” Konfara said. “Ultimately I hope that I can go there and be an immediate impact player and go get the national championship. They’ve been amongst the best in JUCO football for a while now and I’m hoping as a team we can make that last little push and win it all.”
So why go the JUCO route?
“I found them when in December the new JUCO eligibility rule came into play where a player can now play two years of JUCO and not have it count toward their eligibility. I thought this rule could be huge for a player like me who was a late bloomer and really only grew into my frame until my senior year, and just having the two years I thought would be really beneficial. So I started looking into JUCOs and consistently Snow stood out amongst the rest for what I was looking for. So I reached out to all the coaching staff, and communication was really smooth and I was offered, and after a week or two I decided I wanted to commit there.”
Abberger chose Kalamazoo for the proximity and academics.
