Shortly after taking the stage at Coleman Coliseum on May 1, President Donald Trump talked Alabama football.
After being introduced by former Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban, Trump began his remarks at the University of Alabama’s special commencement ceremony by asking students to remember where they were when Saban retired.
And Trump egged on the Alabama crowd when it came to its former football coach.
“Nick (Saban), what a great coach let’s bring him back,” Trump said. “No, you have a great coach right now, though. You have a good coach right now.”
Trump added that Alabama is not only “a great football school,” but “now one of the nation’s best basketball schools.”
Between 2007-23, Saban led Alabama to six national championships and 201 wins: the second-most wins at a single school in SEC history. Only Bear Bryant had more with 232 wins in 25 seasons.
Saban’s seven national championships — six at Alabama and one at LSU — is more than any coach in the modern college football era.
Trump attended Alabama football’s 41-34 win against Georgia on Sept. 28 at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
In his first season with the Crimson Tide, Kalen DeBoer led Alabama to a 9-4 record, the program’s worst since 2007.
