Former MSU starting DB Dillon Tatum transfers to Northwestern

Dillon Tatum will continue his career at another Big Ten school with two years of eligibility remaining

A former Michigan State football starter is heading to a new Big Ten team.

Former Spartans defensive back Dillon Tatum committed to Northwestern on Saturday. He entered the transfer portal last month following the conclusion of spring practice and will now remain in the Big Ten at Northwestern.

Tatum was a four-star in Michigan State’s 2022 recruiting class. He was a starter in 2023 but an injury kept him off the field for the entire 2024 season. He finished his three years in East Lansing with 62 tackles, three tackles for loss and eight passes defends. He played 22 career games.

Tatum struggled with injuries during his time at Michigan State, including missing much of last season. Due to this injury, it appeared Tatum would be playing more of a backup role for the Spartans in 2025.

Tatum has two years of eligibility remaining. The Spartans do not play Northwestern this season but do host the Wildcats in 2026 (as of right now) so there is a chance Tatum will return to Spartan Stadium as an opponent in 2026.
