LAWRENCE — Laith Marjan can walk you through what happened last year, when he had his only missed field goal attempt of the season.
Marjan, then a kicker at South Alabama, remembers how well he hit it, and where it missed. He remembers whether he thought it was going in or not, and how much wind there was. He has an idea of what he could have done to make it, which would have turned his 16-for-17 mark on field goals in 2024 to a perfect 17-for-17, and given him a make from 50 yards or more.
But however much Marjan still thinks about it, the ones he made helped him become a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award. His accuracy is enviable, and something the redshirt senior will look to maintain with Kansas football in 2025 after he transferred during the offseason. And Marjan, who spent 2021-23 at East Carolina, will have the chance to add some memorable kicks to the ones he already has.
“That first one that I made at South Alabama was my first career field goal attempt in college, and that was the first time I had kicked a field goal since — in a game, since high school,” Marjan said in April during spring ball. “So, getting that one just kind of off of my chest felt really good. And then there was just a couple ones, we had big rivalry games against Troy, I went 3-for-3 that game. I had an 102-degree fever one game against Georgia Southern, and so every kick was memorable because I was struggling.”
