Where are the Sooners in USA TODAY Sports’ latest 1-136 re-rank?

The 2025 college football season may still be nearly four months away, but that hasn’t stopped anyone from projecting what it will look like once we finally reach fall. The Oklahoma Sooners are ready to get the bad taste of 2024 out of their mouths with a statement season this year.

USA TODAY Sports staff writer Paul Myerberg released the post-spring edition of his 1-136 re-rank for the 2025 season on Monday. Throughout the year, Myerberg ranks all 136 Division I FBS college football teams, updating it based on the week-to-week action of the college football season. But now that spring ball is behind us, we get our most recent update.

After the 2024 season saw a massive wave of conference realignment and the introduction of the 12-team College Football Playoff, 2025 is a much quieter year on those fronts. The 12-team CFP is still in place for at least one more season, and the only realignment discussion involves the Pac-12.

Despite last year’s 6-7 mark, OU landed at No. 25 on Myerberg’s list. The offseason additions of offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and quarterback John Mateer have people believing Oklahoma will be much better than last year. Head coach Brent Venables is on thin ice this season at Oklahoma, and he’s hoping his offseason moves will pay off.

Myerberg has the Sooners as the eighth-best team in the SEC after spring ball. With most of the roster construction portion of college football’s offseason beginning to wind down, it’s time for Oklahoma to get better internally and improve on that standing when the time for games finally comes.
