USD linebacker Nate Ewell ready for unexpected second season in Vermillion – Mitchell Republic

VERMILLION, S.D. — When University of South Dakota linebacker Nate Ewell walked off the field at Bobcat Stadium in Bozeman, Montana in December following USD’s FCS playoff semifinal defeat to Montana State, it was supposed to be his last time suiting up for the Coyotes.

Ewell arrived in Vermillion ahead of last season as a graduate transfer from NAIA program Grand View, and only had one year of eligibility remaining. He quickly became a key member of USD’s defense, but his tenure was over almost as quickly as it began.

That was then, and much has changed in college sports since then and for Ewell’s benefit.

Benefitting from a recent lawsuit that allowed athletes who attended junior college or a non-NCAA institution an extra year of eligibility, Ewell is back and ready to not only excel on the field as he did last season, but also step into a major leadership role.

“Being able to get another year, especially with what happened at the end of the season and everything that I went through, it was it was a real blessing for me,” Ewell said. “I’m definitely not going to take that for granted at all. I’m going to make the most out of this next year.”
