UNM football: Lobos land UConn QB via portal

May 7—UConn transfer quarterback Cole Welliver committed to New Mexico via a post on social media Wednesday.

The 6-foot-6, 216-pound freshman joins the Lobos with four years to play after spending last season with the Huskies. He appeared in one game last season, completing two of four pass attempts for 10 yards in a 63-17 win over Merrimack.

A former three-star prospect out of Liberty Christian (Texas) High School, Welliver threw for 4,457 yards, 60 touchdowns and seven interceptions in three seasons with the Warriors. Coached by former Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten, he passed for 3,082 yards and 50 touchdowns and led Liberty Christian to a 14-0 record as a senior.

Welliver represents an expected addition after head coach Jason Eck said the Lobos would need to find another quarterback for depth purposes in April. With Jack Layne injured, UNM finished spring practice with only James Laubstein and Gabriel Motschenbacher playing after Isaiah Chavez and Emery Floyd left the program.

Incoming freshman and three-star recruit Toa Faavae will also join the Lobos this summer, bringing UNM's quarterback room to five.

"Five (quarterbacks), I think, is ideal," Eck said April 8. "But you'd rather have six than four."
