The College Football Playoff format might change in the near future

The four power conference commissioners held an in-person meeting in New York on Thursday to discuss several issues, including a future playoff format, sources tell @YahooSports. Big Ten & SEC – they control future format – continue to favor multiple AQs for their conferences.

Notre Dame football was one of the teams that benefited from the College Football Playoff expanding from 4 to 12-teams, and there could be more squads that could be getting to participate in the tournament.

According to Yahoo Sports Ross Dellenger, there is “gaining support” by the SEC and Big Ten to again expand the field, this time going to 16-teams. It would break down with 4 teams from both the SEC and Big Ten, two teams from the ACC and Big 12, a Group of Five team along with three at-large bids.

He says that a decision will be made over the next two months, as the SEC is highly considering moving to a 9-game conference schedule, which would give the conference more revenue with its TV deal with ESPN.

Personally, I thought that an 8-team format made the most sense, as the field gets watered down with more teams. If you look at this year’s bracket, multiple teams didn’t stand a chance to win the CFP, but as we all know money talks.

This probably won’t impact Notre Dame much, as long as they handle their business on the field, they should be in. It will be interesting to see what happens going forward, but the changes could be happening soon.
