Rutgers Football Transfer Portal: Where Have Departing Players Landed?

With the closure of the transfer portal on April 25, many former Scarlet Knights who chose to enter the portal have found their new homes. Only a few of Rutgers transfer have landed at other power five programs, with the rest going down to lower levels of competition in order to net more playing time.

Starting with those who made the move to another Power Four program, Rutgers had three of these. Defensive End Wesley Bailey transferred to Louisville, Offensive Tackle Jaelyne Matthews transferred to Florida State and Linebacker Mohamed Toure transferred to Miami. Bailey and Toure have just one year of eligibility remaining after being stars on Rutgers’ defense for years. Both have led the Knights in sacks for different seasons and have set themselves apart as Power Four talent.

Matthews is a more interesting case because there is no college film on him yet. He is a freshman who only worked with Rutgers for a few months before deciding to transfer. he was a very highly recruited prospect out of the 2024 class which is likely why he was able to land another Power Four gig so easily.

Another former Rutgers player landed at a school that is on the fringes of being in the Power Four, as former Quarterback Ajani Sheppard committed to Washington State. The Cougars currently have a very packed quarterback room with over six on the roster. Sheppard was brought in allegedly because the Cougars coaching staff liked his duel threat play style.

One interesting thing to note is that three of Rutgers former players who decided to play at lower levels of competition landed at the University of Massachusettes. Linebacker Timmy Hinspeter, Tight End Matthew Ogunniyi, and Edge David Onuoha are the former Knights now Minutemen. The interesting thing is that former Rutgers defensive coordinator Joe Harasymiak is now the head coach…
